Fall is the perfect time to capture your family in a series of playful photos that would look perfect framed in your home or on the front of your next holiday card. As a New Haven photographer, it’s my job to know all of the best spots for taking family photos. Here are a few of my favorites, regardless of the season!

Edgerton Park

Edgerton Park is a fabulous place where plant lovers and community members alike can gather. Since 1965, this jewel of a park has been a welcoming space for gardeners and anyone in search of a natural respite. Its green lawns, gorgeous trees, and seasonal New Haven flowers make it a lovely place for a family photographer to capture families.  Photos here can feel bright and natural or dark and moody, depending on the spots you visit. It’s beautiful in every season, whether erupting with blossoms in the spring or covered in golden foliage in the fall.  And if your session happens to be on a very cold day, you can warm up in the greenhouse, which also has beautiful spots for photos!

Eli Whitney Museum

The Eli Whitney Museum created a fabulous place for families to learn and create. But it’s also home to some beautiful property that is perfect for gorgeous outdoor photos. It has climbable tree trunks and rustic trails. There’s a unique iron bridge that crosses over the river that’s perfect for a beautiful waterfront photo session, too.  There’s even a waterfall!  If you’re looking for true East Coast rustic charm, you’ll love taking photos at the red covered bridge, too, surrounded by beautiful trees. And if you still need more, there’s the stunning tall grasses of the Whitney Water Center right across the street!

Chaffinch Island Park

Chaffinch Island Park has a little bit of everything – trees, sandy beaches, and gorgeous views of the West River, Long Island Sound, and Faulkner’s Island. I love the filtered sunlight at this spot and the vivid colors of the scrubby, beachy landscaping. It always feels like it’s part park, part beach, which gives us a lot of opportunity to play with backdrops throughout your family session!  Plus, dogs are welcome!

Stony Creek Branford – The Trolley Trail

The Trolley Trail at Stony Creek Branford is basically a long footbridge that winds through marshy wetlands and along the route of an abandoned trolley track. It’s a beautiful place to spy on some unique wildlife, and the industrial aesthetic of the trail is a unique backdrop for a New Haven photographer to use. The last time I was there, I saw two separate osprey nests up close, with osprey resting in them!  There are plenty of water views, lots of natural greenery and trees, and beautiful spots to stop for pictures.

Whether you’re an alumnus or a resident, its incredible architecture and beautiful landscaping make it an ideal space for photos. Your photos will feel like quintessential New Haven. Featuring stunning buildings, world-famous sculptures, and rolling green lawns for your photographer to play with.  And if you are associated with the university, the photos will feel particularly special to you.  It’s hard to pass up a Yale University family photo session!
