Mother’s Day gift ideas for yourself

Rather than gifts on Mother’s and Father’s Day, we usually let the person of honor plan what they would like the family to do for the day.  We don’t need more stuff, and having the power to choose an activity with enthusiastic participants (who are happy to not have to figure out what gift to get!) is really fun.  Brunch is traditional, but I’m not really a brunch kind of gal myself.  Some other ideas…

  1. PYO flowers – I absolutely love having flowers in the house but I don’t usually go for pre-arranged store bouquets.  I love single-flower bouquets the best (ranunculus, tulips, and peonies are my faves), and I especially love making my own simple arrangements from a combination of flowers and greenery I’ve foraged.  How about an IOU for pick-your-own bouquets once blooms start coming in?  Take the family to Scotts Farms in Essex, Trout Lily Pond Farm in Guilford, or if you can’t wait and want to do this now – how about PYO daffodils at Dancing Daffodils/Halfinger Farms in Higganum?Mother's Day gift ideas for yourself, flowersFlower bouquet, Connecticut
  2. Thimble Island Cruise – Have you taken this little cruise around the iconic Thimble Islands in Long Island Sound yet?  This is a must-do for me this year since we live in the Stony Creek area now.  Cruises on the Sea Mist start on May 1st, or check out the Volsunga IV or the Islander!  Then grab lunch at the Stony Creek Market!  Plus the little village of Stony Creek is quaint and has gorgeous water views.  If you’re feeling like making a whole afternoon of it, walk on over to the Stony Creek Trolley Trail for a picturesque and easy walk with marsh views and an old metal bridge.  It’s one of my favorite photo spots, as some of you know!  The Sea Mist, BranfordStony Creek, BranfordKids at the Branford Trolley Trail
  3. Take the kids to an art museum!  I wish we did this more.  I am definitely going to see Bridget Riley at the Yale Center for British Art this spring, and it’s literally right next door to one of my favorite lunch places in New Haven, Atticus Market.  Or, for dinner, have you been to the Kasbah Garden Cafe on Howe Street?  Their courtyard is an unexpected oasis in downtown New Haven (outdoor seating!).Yale Center for British Art
  4. Guess what my last suggestion is going to be?  Ask your family to be willing, happy participants in a family photo session this summer!  I have several clients who request this for their birthday every year.  Sessions with me are less about “sitting for portraits” and more about spending a fun hour at a beautiful local spot, so after our first session together, kids and spouses need much less convincing.  You can contact me to book here!
