Having a toddler is a wonderful phase of life, full of laughter, joy, and energy. Oh, the energy. Luckily, it’s also a wonderful time to rediscover the world through their new eyes. Here in Connecticut, there are plenty of ways to explore the world with your toddler and burn off some of that awe-inspiring energy. Here are some of my favorite toddler activities in CT!
Explore the World Together with Toddler Activities in CT
Bishop’s Orchards
Bishop’s Orchards is a farmers’ market that has it all! If the season is right, take your toddler to pick your own produce, collecting fruits like blueberries, peaches, raspberries, apples, and pumpkins. Learn where your favorite fruits and veggies come from while getting your hands dirty and enjoying the fresh air!
Bishop’s Orchards also has a delicious creamery where you can enjoy a refreshing ice cream treat (or, in the winter, a cozy warm beverage!). Be sure to stop by the bakery and farm market before you go to stock up on tasty homemade goodies! We shop at Bishop’s for most of our groceries because we think their selections are so good, including lots of organic options and specialty items. It’s a small, easy to navigate store that still seems to have everything you need!
Connecticut Children’s Museum
The Connecticut Children’s Museum is incredible for hands-on learning, exploration, and imagination! Designed with children aged 3 through 9 in mind, kids can pick up instruments in the Musical Room, explore their own emotions using mirrors in the “Face It” space, and practice counting in the Math Room.
The museum is home to a re-creation of the famous bedroom from the book Goodnight Moon and a full Cityscape playhouse where kids can role-play as firefighters, train engineers, and so much more. The Connecticut Children’s Museum is a wonderful place to let your child play and see the world through their eyes as you play alongside them.
Edgewood Park
Edgewood Park spans over 120 acres along the West River and is perfect for a day outside with your little one. Wander the nature and sensory trails and pause to watch wildlife in the duck pond from the wetlands viewing platform. Your kiddo will love tackling the Edgewood Park playground, which has plenty of equipment for smaller children in The Tot Playground.
On warm days, toddlers love running through the Sundial Sprinkler, perfect for keeping cool. Swing by the Ranger Station to meet some awesome amphibians and reptiles up close, and take advantage of their storytelling, arts and crafts, and nature and wildflower walks!
Lighthouse Point
The historic New Haven Lighthouse at Lighthouse Point, tucked up against the rolling coastline, is always neat to see. But there are plenty of things to enjoy onsite with your toddler, too! Lighthouse Point is home to a beautiful carousel that dates back to the 1920s and is one of the last remaining from that era.
There’s also a fabulous splash pad featuring a series of water fountains designed for little explorers looking for a way to cool down on a hot day. There are also restrooms and a bathhouse located conveniently nearby to make a day at Lighthouse Point as functional as it is fun! You can also visit the concession stand for a fun treat after a day of great play in the summer. If you’re lucky, the carousel might even be open for rides!
