Hammonasset Beach State Park

1288 Boston Post Rd, Madison, CT 06443

Whether you want to spend a few hours hiking or a few days camping, Hammonasset Beach State Park has perfect options for you. This space provides you with two miles of beach where you can dig in your toes or catch some waves. Even if you’re not up for a beach day, they have a trail that leads you through nature and multiple microenvironments. You can spend some time around a campfire or hop on a bike and wind around the area. The site has over 550 camping sites as well as rustic cabins where you can camp in style. I love Meig’s Point for a marshy walk, plus you can visit the Nature Center (see below!).  Hammonasset does get crowded on summer weekend afternoons, but aside from those times, you can always find peace and quiet here.  Then stop at a Madison restaurant on your way home for fresh seafood or a yummy pizza pie or an aromatic bowl of pho!

Meigs Point Nature Center

1288 Boston Post Rd, Madison, CT 06443

Meigs Point Nature Center has both indoor and outdoor activities your entire family will love. Inside, you will find exhibits that show you all about the conservation efforts ongoing in the area. You can also learn about snakes, turtles, ospreys, and butterflies. There are saltwater tanks as well as touch tanks. Once you’re done here, you can head out to the gardens, where you’ll find native plants and see pollinators in action. The center strives to teach people the importance of home gardens. They will show you how to grow different plants so you can benefit your community. This is a great activity to get little ones involved in to turn them into lifelong gardeners and stewards of the environment!

Shoreline Greenway Trail

East Haven, Connecticut 06512

Shoreline Greenway Trail is currently being developed to connect New Haven, CT to Madison, CT. You’ll have miles you can explore either by foot or by bike. The trail is wheelchair accessible and family-friendly. Your child will get the chance to run ahead while you chat with people from across the area. As you go, you’ll see forests, prairies, and waterways. Because the trail takes you through the towns, you can stop off for dinner or some shopping before heading back home. The trail is relatively flat, so your family should be able to handle it easily. And because it’s an out-and-back, you can turn around at any time.

Madison Cinemas

Madison, Connecticut 06443

If you’ve had a long day of sun and sea breezes and need a quiet activity to cap off the evening, check out Madison Cinemas to see if there’s something playing for the whole family.  This great little neighborhood theater feels both old school and modern at the same time.  It’s located right on Madison’s main drag, so it’s easy to grab a bite to eat before or after the show.
